California Title 24 Energy Calculation
Updates to Title 24 California energy compliance were completed in July 2008. The California Energy Commission finalized these new 2008 Title 24 energy standards which will become mandatory as of July 1, 2009. The following are highlights of changes which are likely to impact Title 24 energy compliance report and calculations:
Indoor Air Quality
All new residential buildings must conform to requirements as set down by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers’ 62.2 standard. Minimum rates for ventilation and exhaust for kitchen hoods have increased.
Compliance Documentation
In the effort to improve enforcement of energy standards, the California Energy Commission will be requiring electronic Title 24 compliance report documentation.
Cool Roofs
Non-mandatory energy efficient “cool roof” requirements have been included in the 2008 Title 24 update. Existing roofing products can be offset and brought up to code with other efficiency measures such as radiance barriers as add-ons or upgrades.
Window Efficiencies
Minimum performance standards for windows have been increased. Package D’s maximum allowable U-factors were decreased by 30% across all climate zones. Builders will have to make sure that they are installing more energy efficient windows for all projects.
Improvements with HERS Credits
Revisions have been made to HERS requirements and protocols, making for easier compliance with maximum cooling capacity, verified airflow and refrigerant charge. These are areas of opportunity for large compliance credits, so some part of the usual Title 24 energy calculations may be eased.
